HAVANA, Cuba, Oct 18 (acn) Supported mainly on their offensive, the current monarch Granma and the runner-up Ciego de Ávila both won their first matches of the wild card series of the 57th Cuban National Baseball Series.
Granma beat away Villa Clara 5-3 with a 13-hit offensive and excellent relieve by lefty Leandro Martinez, who pitched three scoreless innings to earn the save, while Lazaro Blanco took the win.
OF Yoelkis Cespedes´ two-run homer in the fourth inning was decisive for the winning side and 3B Yeniet Perez also homered for the local squad, while Freddy Asiel Alvarez earned the loss.
Meanwhile, Ciego de Avila defeated 8-2 Artemisa in the other wild-card series at Jose Ramon Cepero Park.
There were offensive highlight to catcher Osvaldo Vazquez who hit two homers and drove in five runs and 3B Raul Gonzalez who hit 3 for 4 with a solo homer and two RBIs.
The win went to Vladimir Garcia, who allowed two runs and six hits in seven innings, and Liomil Gonzalez earned the save, while Misael Villa was the loser.
The second games of this stage will take place tomorrow in Granma and Artemisa respectively.
