HAVANA, Cuba, Jun 18 (ACN) The community is building strengths for the present and future of Cuba with the development of projects such as Familiar de Vida (Family of Life), dedicated to training on permaculture, environmental protection and commercialization of medicinal plants, condiments and vinegar production.
This initiative received an award from the Latin American Office of Education for Human Rights and they are special guests at the 3rd Science and Education Congress, which will be held until June 19 at the Convention Center in Havana.
Since 2003 they began as a cultural action, but as a result of social transformation, the governance model based on science and innovation and the socio-educational and economic needs of the community of Altura de la Vibora-Vieja Linda, in the municipality of Arroyo Naranjo, its structure was approved in 2015 as a community project, Natalia Caridad Quintana Lopez, general coordinator of Familiar de Vida, told the Cuban News Agency.
About their work, she said that they do education and create strengths to mitigate the effects of climate change in the neighborhood, they are involved with the scientific societies of the Iselin Jimenez pre-university and created circles of interest in the Ruben Aldama elementary school and the Primero de Enero junior high school, spaces for learning about food conservation, food sovereignty, care for biodiversity and vocational training.
Quintana Lopez commented on the teaching to the population of the green map methodology, which allows them to learn to carry out surveys of the vulnerabilities, dangers and risks existing in the community, in their own space, in their own lives, and enables them to draw up strategies to overcome the difficulties and raise the resilience of the localities.
The Familiar de Vida project contributes to the promotion of knowledge, socio-educational inclusion through work with different age groups, attention to people with disabilities and other vulnerable people, support to former prisoners in their social insertion, the generation of more than 900 jobs, the learning of sign language so that everyone has the same opportunities, the culture of recycling and the production of food, necessary pillars for Cuban education and social system.
