HAVANA, Cuba, Apr 11 (ACN) In a post on X, Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel recalled the coup attempt against Commander Hugo Chávez in Venezuela 22 years ago in Venezuela.
“On April 11, 2002, Venezuela and the world were surprised by a coup attempted by pro-Yankee right-wingers against the constitutional President Hugo Chávez and the Bolivarian Revolution,” he wrote.
Diaz-Canel praised the way the Venezuelan people took to the streets in support of their president to thwart the actions organized by the Venezuelan opposition and reinstate Chavez in his post just two days later.
The coup plotters stormed the Miraflores Palace, demanded the resignation of President Hugo Chávez—whom they accused of disregarding private property, abolishing the Land Law and exerting a dictatorial authority—and took the leader to an army base on the Orchila Island.
However, in the early hours of April 14, loyal military officers rescued Chávez and took him to Miraflores, where he was received by a cheering crowd.
