HOLGUIN, Cuba, Nov 24 (ACN) The Holguin Agricultural Extension, Research and Training Unit (UEICA by its Spanish acronym) is committed to the development of sustainable agriculture through the implementation of climate-smart techniques.
The center also develops the strengthening of resilience capacities of productive forms through the use of isotopes and genetic procedures.
Yovanis Ferraz Tellez, head of the Department of Food and Vegetables of the entity, explained to the Cuban News Agency that they also promote organic farming practices, such as the use of alternative nutrition and organic pesticides to improve food production by adapting them to the climate of the territory.
Thanks to this research, they have achieved genetic diversity banks, where varieties of grains, pastures, vegetables and tropical viands are planted, including 92 common bean cultivars, 27 sweet potato clones, 15 plantain and nine species of grasses, he said.
In addition, the unit is linked to projects that seek to promote territorial self-sufficiency, as well as adequate nutrition for vulnerable sectors of the population.
With 36 years of work in the province, the UEICA has specialized departments that cover different agricultural areas under the responsibility of a staff of competent professionals who also teach at university centers, which strengthens practical links with academia.
