Cuban experts confirm low prevalence of orange rust on sugarcane

HAVANA, Cuba, Aug 30 (ACN) A study on phytosanitary surveillance and characterization of orange rust of sugar cane in Cuba showed that its prevalence is low.

However, it indicated that some of its main commercial varieties are susceptible and confirmed its most severe potential danger in plantations carried out from April to September.

The results of the research by a group of specialists were published in the most recent edition of the journal Anales de la Ciencia Cubana (Annals of Cuban Science).

Its authors used optical microscopy and real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests in commercial plantations, seed areas and experimental stations, according tothe magazine, the official scientific communication channel of the Cuban Academy of Sciences.

One of the manifestations of the infectious pathogen appeared in 2008, although in current practice there were variations in terms of its stringency by type, on which a protocol was developed to select resistant cultivars.

Experts from the Cuban Sugarcane Research Institute (INICA by its Spanish acronym) and colleagues from Argentina carried out similar tests and concluded that it is present in Asia, Africa and America.

Anales de la Academia de Ciencias de Cuba publishes four-monthly full-text issues, with abstracts in Spanish and English, in sections focused on agricultural and fisheries, biomedical, technical, natural and exact, social and humanistic sciences.
