CIEGO DE AVILA, Cuba, May 3 (ACN) The first 110 hectares that were cleared of potatoes in Ciego de Avila (central Cuba) are already planted with corn and pumpkin, as part of the strategy of Agriculture to use the residual fertilizer used in that tuber.
Raul Monguia Rodriguez, a specialist in the provincial delegation of Agriculture in the cultivation of potatoes, informed the Cuban News Agency that 80 hectares of corn were planted and 30 hectares of pumpkin, foods that benefit from the remains of the complete formula of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium (NPK) in the fields.
He explained that each of these 110 hectares, covered with national seed, received 1.49 tons of NPK in the campaign, so taking advantage of what is left of them in those soils is a practice that should never be dismissed.
The agricultural official recalled that 2,046 tons were harvested in the 110 hectares, with average yields of 18.6 tons and aimed at the consumption of the population; social destinations such as health and education centers; the industry of the province to produce potato chips; and tourism, in that order.
