Cuba receives UN donation of sexual and protective equipment

HAVANA, Cuba, Aug 20 (ACN) The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) made a donation to Cuba consisting of male condoms and personal protective equipment (masks and protective suits) for health workers; in particular those providing sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services.

The so-called condoms were donated by the Commodity Security Branch, an UNFPA unit in charge of insuring SRH supplies, based on a request made by the Office in Cuba taking into account the needs for contraceptive methods and condoms in the country.
According to a note published on the official UNFPA website, its global positive response to the request occurs in a context of the global health crisis that has disrupted SRH supply chains around the world; which, in the case of Cuba, adds to the negative impact of the economic, commercial and financial blockade of the United States against the Caribbean island.
The donation also includes 500 protective suits that completely cover the body of health personnel who will use them from neck to ankles, three thousand mouth masks, which limit the transmission of the virus, and 1,500 face masks.
On other occasions, UNFPA donated sanitary material to Cuba for maternal health and family planning services, which consisted of hormonal contraceptives, including pills and emergency contraception.
In addition, reusable material donated by the agency is distributed to perform caesareans and other obstetric surgeries, which will reach 17 hospitals in all provinces of the country.
Similarly, 200 pregnant women who are in maternal homes in Havana receive, as part of this donation, personal hygiene supplies, much needed in this context of health crisis.
