Cuban Americans increasingly support new US policy towards Cuba

HAVANA, Cuba, Apr 2 (acn) A new national survey in the U.S. revealed an increasing support over the past three months by Cuban Americans of a new policy approach towards Cuba as 51 percent of those interviewed were in favor if compared to a December pall that showed 48 percent supporting the new move.

The poll results, which were reported by Florida-based media outlets, showed the decreasing trend of those against the change now at 41 percent, while in December the figure stood at 44.

The survey, conducted by Bendixen & Amandi International also showed that Cuban Americans residing outside of the Florida state embraced the new policy much more than the ones in that southern territory. Some 49 percent of those living in Florida disagreed with the new policy aimed at normalizing bilateral relations while 41 percent said they agreed.

But, 69 percent of Cuban Americans residing out of Florida supported the change of policy, according to the initiative of Bendixen & Amandi International, which polled 400 Cuban Americans 18 years old and older on between March 20th to 25th.

The survey included questions related to the reestablishing of diplomatic relations, allowing more Americans to travel to Cuba, raising the amounts of remittances, cooperating with Cuba in areas like the protection of the environment, and increasing trade, even if the blockade against the island is not lifted.

Fifty one percent of people between 18 and 29 years said the blockade should be lifted and 56 percent in the age group between 30 and 49 said that policy should not continue. Only older Cuban Americans of about 65 years, some 45 percent, supported the US's anti-Cuba policy. This position is only being maintained by older Cubans who traveled to the United States in the early days of the Revolution, which reveals the evident change in new generations of Cuban Americans.
