HAVANA, Cuba, Jun 9 (acn) Cuba championed the strengthening of cooperation between universities of the member countries of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) and the European Union (EU) during the 2nd Academic Summit of both regional blocs, which began on Monday in Brussels.
We want to go from theory to practice so we can materialize more projects in areas of common interest, expressed in his speech Santiago Lage, rector of the University of Camagüey, the Prensa Latina (PL) news agency reported.
Lage criticized the so-called European Common Position, a policy of interference that once excluded Cuba from a series of cooperation agreements with the EU.
However, many agreements and letters of intent have allowed exchanges between Cuban and European centers, he said.
The academician highlighted that higher education in Cuba is based on a humanist, modern and universal model at the service of the people.
The Academic Summit precedes the CELAC-EU Summit, and brings together teachers from both regions as well as members of international organizations such as the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) and the United Nations Education, Science and Culture Organization (Unesco).
Roberto Escalante, general secretary of the Union of Universities of Latin America and the Caribbean, told PL that the two regions have different realities, but that here are areas of common interest, such as the struggle against climate change and in favor of food security.
The agreements of this two-day meeting will be presented to the Heads of State or Government during the bi-regional summit, to be held on June 10 and 11.
