Cuba appoints its first female Master of Rum

Cuba appoints its first female Master of RumHAVANA, Cuba, May 25 (acn) At the opening of the Fourth International Scientific and Technical Symposium on Light Rum, last Tuesday in the province of Matanzas, it was announced the appointment of engineer Salome Alemán Carriazo as Master of Cuban Rum.

During the opening ceremony, at Cardenas Rum Factory, it was read the resolution 41 of 2016 of the Corporation Cuba Ron SA, issued by its president Juan Gonzalez Escalona, which explains that Alemán met all requirements to hold this position.

For the first time in over 150 years of history of Cuban light rums a woman is named Master, the highest rank attainable in this industry, which requires going through many years of training, sacrifice and talent.

To date, Cuba had seven Masters of Cuban rum, but according to Master Juan Navarro, this movement was never conceived only for men, and even four of the first seven candidates were women.

After fulfilling this first stage, I aspire to be able to pass on my knowledge to new generations, to keep alive the traditions of Cuban rum, Salome exclusively told ACN.

With 28 years of experience in the industry, after graduating as chemical engineer in CUJAE University, the new Master works at Santa Cruz Rum Factory, in the province of Mayabeque.

The Fourth International Scientific and Technical Symposium on Light Rum was opened on May 24, and will be on session for three days in the resort of Varadero, attended by over 180 delegates from a dozen countries.

This meeting is vital for one of the most emblematic industries in Cuba as it allows the exchange between producers, traders and suppliers of Cuban light rums, González Escalona said in his opening remarks.
