Fewer births in Cuban province in 2019HAVANA, Cuba, Apr 1(ACN) As of March 29, 1,615 births have been reported in the central Cuban province of Camagüey, 216 fewer than those registered on the same date the previous year, which continues to be one of the incidences of the aging of the territory's population, with 20.3 percent of people over 60 years of age.

The low birth rate is now present in this province, where intensive work is being done to reduce the infant mortality rate.

So far there are 3.1 deaths per 1,000 live births, according to Ivette Prince Martínez, head of the Maternal and Infant Care Program (PAMI) at the Provincial Health Directorate.

In this regard, she explained the importance of preventing diseases in young children, especially at an early age, through compliance with the vaccination scheme in force in the country, breastfeeding, and proper administration of the vitamin supplement to the mother and her child, among other actions.

The decrease in teenage pregnancy - which represents almost 22 percent of pregnant women in the territory - and the use of abortion in this age group as a contraceptive method, are the main challenges for professionals, and commented on the need to link the family, school and youth organizations, women and neighborhoods for the task.

Preterm labor - which occurs before 37 weeks - also affects compliance with PAMI indicators in the province, due to untreated or uncured vaginal infections during pregnancy, and maternal complications such as high blood pressure and pre-eclampsia.

Dr. Ivette Prince highlighted, however, the existence of all the diagnostic resources and highly qualified specialists and family planning consultations available in health areas, pediatric hospitals and surgical clinics, and municipal assistance units that have maternity service.

Camagüey was the Cuban province with the lowest mortality rate in 2018 with 2.61 deaths per 1,000 live births, also the lowest figure for that indicator in its history.
