Important Achievements in Orthopedic Service at the Calixto Garcia HospitalHAVANA, Cuba, Jan 23 (ACN) The Orthopedic and Traumatology Service at the Calixto Garcia University Hospital in Havana carried out over three thousand 500 surgeries last year of these, one thousand 500 scheduled surgeries, said an expert.

Speaking to the Cuban News Agency, the Head of the Orthopedic Service, Dr. Juan Diaz Quesada for over 30 years pointed out that they carried out over two thousand major and minor surgeries in 2017.

He highlighted the advances of emergency and scheduled traumatology surgery if you take into account that the service includes patients from the province of Havana, Mayabeque and Artemisa and the special municipality of the Isle of Youth.

An average of two thousand patients are attended in the emergency ward and in outpatient consults about 700 people were received at the prestigious institution. The rate of hospital stay last year was very low, said Dr. Diaz Quesada, also professor at the Calixto Garcia Faculty.

Some 70 major scheduled surgeries were carried out during the period, and 40 to 50 major emergency operations.

The hospital is a reference center for services of neurosurgery, maxillofacial and other surgical specialties but also assists pregnant women when they are traumatized, many times they go to the hospital to get osteosynthesis, while the hospital also carries out C sections and deliveries, said the specialist.

The Orthopedics ward, amidst a refurbishing process, will have an important number of beds according with the international standards with smaller cubicles with more privacy for the patients and the hospital will have modern Nuclear MRIs and 3D ultrasound, he said.

As part of the 122nd anniversary of the Calixto Garcia University Hospital, founded on January 23rd, 1896, the Calixto 2018 Convention is underway gathering over one thousand 700 national and foreign specialists who are updating and exchanging the latest medical specializations.

Modern techniques will be demonstrated on Wednesday for the treatment of fractures carried out worldwide and Dr. Alfredo Ceballos Mesa, Merit Professor will offer a master conference.
