Malignant tumors are leading cause of death in Eastern Cuban province

Close to 2 thousand people died in 2014 in this territory by all cancers, for a rate of 109 per 100,000 inhabitants, while the most affected people were those who are older than 85 years.

The municipalities with the highest number of deaths reported are Báguano, Cacocum, Cueto, Sagua de Tánamo, Gibara, Banes, Calixto Garcia, Urbano Noris, Holguin and Antilla , the digital page of Tele Cristal TV center published today.

The same site reported that the trachea, bronchus and lung cancers ranked first for both sexes, followed by the prostate in men and breast in women.

It also adds that mortality from preventable malignant tumors is reduced in several organs, including those of cervix, breast and colon, but the ones in prostate and lung have increased.

This disease is a health problem not only in Holguin, but also in 10 other Cuban provinces, which is primarily related to risk factors such as age, improper eating habits, smoking, obesity and unprotected sex practices among others.
