José Alberto Torres, best coffee farmer in Cuba six times in a rowHAVANA, Cuba, May 17 (ACN) José Alberto Torres is a coffee grower that works and lives in the heart of the Sierra Cristal, in the municipality of Segundo Frente, and for the sixth consecutive time is the best integral coffee producer in Cuba, a merit recognized on May 17, Cuban Peasant Day.

Torres belongs to the Cooperativa de Créditos y Servicios (CCS) Ramón Martínez and is a member of the National Association of Small Farmers (ANAP), in the province of Santiago de Cuba, from where he contributes to the national effort to rescue this important economic sector.
He is tall, has a white complexion and light-colored eyes and, although he is not a big man, his hands are rough and furrowed by the hard work and commitment to the land, which in the hills is more difficult to cultivate and attend to.
At 44, he has always been linked to coffee growing, to which he devoted himself since he was 15 years old, working with his father.
Those who know him speak of his love and dedication to the work in the countryside, without ceasing to attend to the family that is his eternal support, since he has been married for more than 20 years, has three daughters studying and this encourages him to grow more integrally in the coffee business.
From his farm, La Nueva Recompensa (The new reward), in the intricate district of Puerto Escondido, he stands out in the peasant cooperative sector for the gradual rise in coffee production, in line with a careful work in the care of the crop.
In this sense, he spoke of the importance of not violating labor standards with permanent attention to the plantations, pruning, weeding, fertilizing, cleaning the area, regulating shade and incorporating science and technology.
He also includes measures to help cope with weather and other climate change-related situations.
He owns 27 hectares, of these 12 dedicated to coffee and the rest diversified for the production of fruit trees, citrus fruits, various crops and livestock, in addition to the polyculture that provides greater use of the areas and resources available.
Regarding the Coffee Development Program until 2020, he said that 80 percent of the plantations were replaced by new plants that are produced in the cooperative's own nurseries, and that 90 percent of the agricultural products are contracted and sold to the State.
Regarding the anniversary of May 17, he said that the Revolution gave the land to the peasants and cares for them in those places so intricate with resources, electrification, access roads, free education and health, plus other basic services in the communities.
The main mission of the farmers of Segundo Frente municipality is to produce for the people and fulfill their productive commitments to the government, he said.
And hat in hand, he said, is the best tribute to the 60th anniversary of the Peasant Congress on Arms that on September 21, 1958, in this heroic town of Cuba, the then Commander Raul Castro Ruz presided over. ´
