Cuban Beekeepers overfulfill Production PlanHAVANA, Cuba, Oct 5 (acn) Beekeepers of the Cuban central province of Ciego de Avila exceeded the 105 tons of bee honey planned for the period January-September and intend to make the most of the remaining months of the year.
Engineer Robin Perez, general director of the Apiculture Business Unit in this territory, told ACN that the goal is to complete 120 tons before the end of the year, despite the shortage of flowers, as they haven´t still plenty recovered from Hurricane Irma´s affectations.
He added that there are more than 7.000 beehives under exploitation in the ten municipalities of the province and the cooperatives linked to the National Association of Small Farmers contributed more than two thirds of the total of that exquisite product, which price in the foreign market is around 2.600 euros per ton, according to official sources.
Bee honey and its derivatives are exportable items, among the most important of the Ministry of Agriculture, since the country annually earns in this way millions of dollars.
Cuba collects each year about 8.000 tons of honey, and the purpose is to gradually increase levels through a program of development and genetic improvement of bees, the promotion of honey flora and the diversification of products to get greater added value.
