Cuba Continues an Education Project in Penitentiary Centers

Havana, Cuba, Jun 15 (ACN) One of the priorities of the Cuban Education Ministry (MINED) is to continue educating prisoners in order to help them reinstate into society as better human beings, said directives of the entity.

Talking to the press in Havana, Maura Tomasen, National Director of Youth and Adult Education commented that through agreements with the Interior Ministry, specifically with the Directive of Penitentiary Centers the conditions has been established to continue increasing the educational level of the inmates.

She pointed out that many people in prison have joined the different subsystems of Education in addition to other programs offered in the prisons like the training in skills and qualified workers.

The Education representative said that MINED professors offer classes in the centers in addition to training and accredit detainees as instructors who, according to their prison sentences and preparation can give classes and receive a salary.

The director explained that since the Literacy Campaign in the early 60's, Cuba has systematically prioritized education in prisons with notable results, which have been recognized by the students and teachers.

Regarding the upgrading actions, Aida Terrero, Head of the Youth and Adult Education Project highlighted the Jose Marti movements, painting and literary contests, work in libraries and other instructive actions with prisoners.

She also highlighted the excellent preparation of the professors that work with the prison population which, in Cuba, have rights and obligations in favor of their reeducation, rehabilitation and reinsertion in society.
