Cuban province works on better use of irrigation systems

HAVANA, Cuba, Mar 23 (ACN) The potential offered by the hydraulic works of the East-West water transfer tunnel, still under construction, is one of the main sources for Holguín to progressively increase its irrigation systems in the agricultural sector.

With its execution base at the Mayarí dam, this facility already brings significant volumes of water for the various crops from the investments undertaken in areas mainly of the Guatemala Company located in Mayarí territory and the municipality of Cueto in the east of Holguin.

To these ends, the agricultural entity already has 36 irrigation machines for different types of activities and it is estimated that during the present year another 10 are installed in correspondence with the programs of this area in the provincial delegation of Agriculture.

Rafael Cuenca, official of this branch in the eastern territory told ACN that this year they will focus on works at the Birán-Báguano canal, through which they will extend to more than two thousand hectares of different crops under irrigation.

The bulk of the plantations benefited with irrigation in this entity, the main agricultural production pole of Holguin, are of rice, a line that contributes to the reduction of imports in the purchase of this food in the international market.
