Recovery of water systems benefit Havana's people

HAVANA, Cuba, Jan 20 (acn) Five years after the implementation of the water loss reduction program in Havana, the province has 217 completed works benefited over 1.8 million people.

In this period of implementation, this strategy has behaved in accordance with the annual plans approved and their technological organization, Javier Toledo, delegate of the National Institute of Hydraulic Resources (INRH by its Spanish acronym) told the press.

He pointed out that investments made possible to reduce by more than 23 000 the people who were permanently supplied with water in pipes, and in about 60 000 those who suffered floods from the rains.

It also allowed the elimination of more than 150 infiltration wells, as well as the recovery of a figure above 1500 liters per second that were lost in leaks, added Toledo.

He included among the main investments or achievements the increase in pumping capacity in the central system in the so-called Eastern system, the construction of the Bejucal aqueduct and the Jaruco la Coca water transfer extraction, which stabilizes the supply to 60 000 inhabitants.

Toledo added that more than 46 000 electric meters have been placed for water measurement, two waste treatment plants were built, and a third one is in the finishing phase, which reduces the pollutant load of the rivers and streams flowing into the Bay of Havana.

The strategy of reducing losses must be fulfilled in 14 years, and for that the territory has about 15 brigades for rehabilitation of the networks of its hydraulic system.
