Fidel and Raul Honored on 15th Anniversary of Latin American Medical SchoolHAVANA, Cuba, Nov 15 (acn) Special certificates of acknowledgement were sent on Friday to the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, and Army General Raul Castro, President of the councils of State and Ministers, on the occasion of the 15th anniversary of the founding of Havana's Latin American Medical School (ELAM).

On behalf of the two leaders, Jose Ramon Machado Ventura, second secretary of the Central Committee of the Cuban Communist Party (CC of the PCC) and Vice-president of the councils of State and Ministers, received the two acknowledgements during the ceremony held at the square of the center of higher studies.

During the ceremony, on behalf of current Medicine students, South African Johann Molome expressed his gratitude for the training they receive in Cuba and highlighted the spirit of humanism in which health professionals are trained at this center, located west of the Cuban capital.

Also presiding over the ceremony, in addition to Machado Ventura, were Jorge Risquet, member of the CC of the PCC; Dr. Roberto Moreles, Public Health Minister; and Dr. Santiago Badia, general secretary of the National Union of Health Workers.

Founded by Fidel on November 15, 1999, the ELAM arrives to its 15th anniversary with a role of 6, 075 students of 117 countries.

A total of 24,486 physicians of 33 nations have graduated from the ELAM, over 3,600 of which are specialists in Comprehensive General Medicine and 1,221 studied a second specialty.
