HAVANA, Cuba, Nov 23 (acn) Cuban men Alberto Almenares, in the 60 kg division, and Osniel Solis (66) will debut today in the Osaka Judo Grand Slam 2018, running in that Japanese city until next Sunday and attended by 421 athletes from 71 countries.
According to ( www.ippon.org), website of the tournament, Almenares and Solis will face Chilean Hugo Vera and Polish Patryk Wawrzyczek, in that order.
Cuban women Anaili Dorvigni (57) and Maylin del Toro (63), fifth seat at the 2018 Baku World Championships, will have their first bouts on Saturday.
The best chances of medals for the Caribbean island will be on Sunday, mainly with woman Idalis Ortiz (+78) and man Ivan Silva (90), runners-up in the aforementioned contest in the capital of Azerbaijan.
Woman Kaliema Antomarchi (78) and man Andy Granda (+100), the latter ranked fifth in the World Open of Marrakech, Morocco, in 2017, will also debut on Sunday.
The main purpose of the Cuban judokas is to continue earning points for the world ranking ahead of the Pan American Games in Lima 2019 and the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
Cuba´s best judokas in the world ranking are Ortiz, who appears fourth, and Silva (fifth), according to the International Judo Federation (IJF) website.
The list continues with Antomarchi (10), Solis (19), del Toro (22), Granda (24), Dorvigni (65) and Almenares (68).
