Holguin increases renewable energy facilities

HAVANA, Cuba, Apr 4 (ACN) The eastern province of Holguin has over 3,200 renewable energy facilities, means that will progressively contribute to increase savings in fossil fuel consumption.

Rosell Gonzalez, vice-president of the Council of Provincial Administration, who is in charge of energy sector, stressed to Cuban News Agency that their goal is to have as many of these facilities as possible in the 14 municipalities of this province.

The investment program, he said, is developed with the objective of responding to the national strategy of increasing the availability of alternative energy in support of different social programs and the economy using wind, sun, water and waste from sugar cane among other alternative means.

At present, the territory has 12 windmills located in the municipality of Gibara, 1 262 262 photovoltaic panels distributed in state centers and 819 photovoltaic heaters.

Holguín also has 673 windmills to provide energy to water pumps installed in wells to supply cattle ranches, as well as hydraulic rams, micro hydroelectric and over 200 forest biomass kilns.

Today, installing solar panels in areas far from the national grid is a priority due to its social and economic value. They are also working on the setting up pf photovoltaic parks and the construction of the second small hydroelectric plant in the Mayarí dam in the municipality of the same name, since the first one became operational last October.

Together, all of these facilities and facilities can provide the province with a power generation capacity of 500 megawatts, the same one that has the Lidio Ramón Pérez thermoelectric plant in Felton, according to the information given to the press by the management of the Electric Company in Holguin.
