With its almost exclusive formations of rounded peaks that some poet compared to sleeping elephants, Viñales, one of the oldest areas of Cuba, gives each visitor the beauty of its landscapes, which have become an excellent letter of introduction.

Cultural Landscape of Humanity, among its treasures stand out exponents of its plant world, which are true rarities, as is the case of the cork palm, endemic to the region, which is considered a living fossil because of its prehistoric origin.

Also inhabits there the bonita de la sierra, a curious specimen, similar to an arborescent fern, for its straight trunk, with a tuft of leaves at its end, and in the stage of its adulthood its bouquets of pink flowers sprout.

This territory in the province of Pinar del Río, known as the Natural Cathedral of Cuba, has other charms, such as the largest cave systems in Cuba, especially the Great Cavern of Santo Tomás.

With kilometers still unexplored, the cave was discovered in 1954 and the curious figures formed by the stalactites and stalagmites give it a subjugating beauty that those who venture up a steep path to its different links enjoy.

It constitutes the most important cave system in Cuba, located in the Sierra de Quemados, while its caverns are considered significant not only for their 46.2 kilometers in size, but also for their Pleistocene fossils and their natural perfection. (Maritza Padilla, ACN)
