Santiago de Cuba offers an unforgettable experience to those who travel to that eastern region and soak up the warmth of its supportive and friendly people, the same people who invite you to enjoy boleros, son, tobacco and rum.
The smell of the sea rises to the city from the bay and evokes the mixture of European and African races, the cadence of the batá drums, the sound of the Chinese bugle, the majesty that raises one of the first seven villages founded by Diego Velázquez, in 1515.
Santiago is also mountains, lush vegetation and rough sea, which invites you to contemplate it from the Castle of San Pedro del Morro, a World Heritage Site that houses the Museum of Piracy.
But its streets and the walls of its buildings, the Moncada Barracks, the City Hall, the patrimonial Santa Ifigenia Cemetery, the Céspedes Park, the Cathedral with its eclectic architecture, the Diego Velázquez House Museum, the Plaza de Marte, Enramadas Street and the picturesque Padre Pico Street are also part of the history of the city.
This July 25, this charming city will reach its 506th anniversary, and although the situation of the pandemic caused by Covid-19 prevents it from celebrating with the festivities it deserves, it is well worth wishing it a long life. (María Elena Balán, ACN)
