The enhancement of the cultural heritage in order to promote tourism in the northern area of Camagüey province is the goal that drives the creation and future implementation of several local development projects in Batey Jaronú, a National Monument in the municipality of Esmeralda.

That sugar heritage represents an inseparable element of the identity of the Cuban people, and a living example is that sugar mill, explained the architect Gerson Herrera Pupo, Professor of the Center for Multidisciplinary Studies of Tourism (Cemtur) of the University of Camagüey Ignacio Agramonte.

According to what he said, since 2012, they began to identify the main heritage resources linked to sugar production, and its potential as a possible tourist attraction.

Providing those values to visitors as a complementary service to sun and beach tourism is the main objective, and one of the three axes of the project is the creation of a thematic railroad that joins the municipal capital with the batey (town), with a tour of several villages whose cultural heritage is visible to visitors, said Herrera Pupo.

A museum will also be added inside the mill's facilities, all under the concept of a living museum, since it is expected that visitors will be able to witness in real time the entire manufacturing process. (Yanais Vega Bacallao, ACN)
