sanjuanremedios

San Juan de los Remedios is the eighth Villa founded by the Spaniards in Cuba and although it has not been possible to determine the exact day and month of its constitution by its founder, Captain Vasco Porcallo de Figueroa, one of the most notable figures of the Hispanic conquest in Cuba, it was decided to set June 24, 1515 as the official date.

Historians affirm that the priest Bartolomé de las Casas was there on some occasion and left a record in one of his letters, the only indication that refers to its early emergence, with a church of clay and dried palm leaves, parish priest and parishioners.

The colonial airs survive in San Juan de los Remedios, in its architecture, squares and alleys, balustrades and railings that resemble filigree, along with lantern holders and lamps, of the most varied sizes and shapes, that evoke the time of carriages and long skirts on the cobblestone.

The city stands out as a tourist destination of great attraction for national and foreign visitors, who enjoy learning about the myths and legends of güijes, demons and loves in the eighth village.

The inhabitants of San Juan de los Remedios are organized every December in two neighborhoods, which face each other in the mythical Parrandas de Remedios, with the picturesque floats, square works, music, fireworks and other initiatives that classify as one of the most famous festivities in Cuba.
