sunwingSunwing, a Canadian airline, restarted operations to Cuba last Sunday through the Juan Gualberto Gomez International Airport, in Varadero, with two flights per week from Toronto and Montreal, frequency that will be maintained in the current winter season.

José Batista, representative of the airline in Cuba´s main tourist sun and beach center, told ACN that around 300 tourists arrived in Varadero to enjoy their vacations, most of them with reservations for Gaviota hotels, as Gaviota Tours is receptive to the airline.

Batista said that they expect resuscitation little by little, because before the global scourge of the COVID-19 pandemic, in the so-called high season for tourism in Varadero, 46 weekly flights were received and about twenty in the summer, and as of December and until February only two planes will arrive on Sundays.

The existing bio-security measures both in the air terminal from the arrival of the passengers, and in the hotel facilities where they will enjoy their stays, show the spa on the Hicacos Peninsula as a safe destination and constitute a guarantee for everyone, visitors and workers, he noted.

The Sunwing official added that they will already offer excursions through Trans Gaviota to Havana, in Varadero itself to the new boulevard, and the speedboat rides from La Marina, located in Punta de Hicacos, are renewed.

At the Juan Gualberto Gomez International Airport, which restarted operations last October, there are so far no workers infected with the SARS Cov-2 virus that causes the COVID-19 and control is very strict at the arrival of each flight.

TranStar airline, also from Canada, reopened flights to Varadero, although it previously also traveled to other Cuban airports. (Bárbara Vasallo, ACN)
