Ecuador Calls to Unity after Assuming CELAC ChairmanshipHAVANA, Cuba, Jan 30 Can) Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa called on Thursday to unity in order to achieve a stronger presence in the international arena, after receiving in Belen, Costa Rica, the pro tempore chairmanship of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC).

"Only unity will make this region big," he asserted during his speech to presidents and top officials participating in the CELAC summit held in Costa Rica, on behalf of the 33 member countries of the body.
After assuming the rotating chairmanship, Correa said that the bloc should try to always act with common positions to make the voices of its members be heard, and carry out interventions jointly at the United Nations to strengthen the CELAC as an interlocutor in the international arena.
The Ecuadorian head of state announced that the issue of strengthening the role of CELAC as a bloc will be one of the five areas of work during the exercise of the pro tempore chairmanship by Ecuador in 2015.
The other priority issues will be reducing extreme poverty and inequality; education, science, technology and innovation; environment and climate change; and funding for infrastructure and connectivity.
He also referred to giving a boost to large infrastructure projects that guarantee regional integration and connectivity, which includes road, energy and communication mega-projects.
Rafael Correa expressed his country's commitment to continue working to strengthen the integration process and thanked Costa Rica for the progress made during its chairmanship period in the bloc.
