HAVANA, Cuba, Sep 12 (acn) Activists in Washington D.C. are staging a vigil September 12 in front of the White House to mark the 16th anniversary of the arrest of the five Cuban anti-terrorist fighters known as the Cuban Five, out of whom three are still being held in US prisons.

The peaceful demonstration will urge President Barack Obama to solve this case and release Gerardo Hernandez, Ramón Labañino and Antonio Guerrero who along Rene Gonzalez and Fernando Gonzalez were arrested September 12 1998 and later given unfair sentences after they monitored Florida-based violent organizations that planned terrorist actions against Cuba.

The Washington initiative is part of an ongoing international campaign that kicked off September 4 and that runs till October 6 in different countries, where activists are demanding the release of the three Cubans.

The program includes the vigil and visits by activist to US Congress people both democrats and republicans at Capitol Hill.

Despite the huge international claim and denunciations against irregularities in the legal process against the Cuban Five, only Fernando Gonzalez and Rene Gonzalez have been able to return to Cuba after they fully served their unfair prison sentences at US penitentiaries.
